I’m fortunate to work with a wonderful Head of Governance and Risk Stagecoach, and she’d be the first to admit her job is far from sexy, but what she brings to the table is irreplacable. I know those two terms are possibly the MOST boring terms in the history of IT, but honestly – they are king. I think the big reason the blogs never manage to meet the holy grail of automation for me, is because I’m boring, and I feel lot of them miss out critical steps, typically around governance or asset management. Having said that, I don’t think I’ve ever written a complete blog post either, so no pointing fingers from me!
And shock horror, each one was completely different, each of the authors wanted to achieve different things but none of them we’re complete in my eyes. I’ve spent plenty of time in the past year reading Twitter and LinkedIn posts, blogs and technical articles on the best way of achieving end-to-end provisioning and configuration of servers.
But are you doing it for the right reasons, and are you making sure you are getting the most value out of your automation? Not having to click through a wizard, manually apply IP addresses or patch a machine, is attractive for anyone who has sat around as Microsoft’s latest patch update trickles through your virtual NIC. Fully automating server infrastructure for most is the holy grail for a majority of sysadmins (or whatever the modern day job title is).
